During pregnancy your baby (or babies!) are feeling along with you!

Pregnant women experience the extraordinary sensation of noticing that their baby shares their feelings. So, when you are pregnant you not only eat for two but also feel for two. As soon as you become pregnant, your stress, fear, anger but also joy and happiness not only reflect your own emotional state but also influence the feelings, wellbeing and thus the development of your unborn child. This article informs you about the consequences of stress and other factors on your baby.

Initially be assured that temporary periods of stress at the beginning of a pregnancy have no harming influence on the development of the foetus. The unborn child has no powers of recall yet, meaning he or she lives only in the here and now, thus it cannot be affected by any short-term stress transmitted from their mother; as soon as she herself calms down, the child follows suit and also calms down.

Starting in the second trimester of pregnancy, the mother’s body provides an additional stress-blocker: as soon as you enter this phase of your pregnancy your body releases an enzyme which works against the stress messenger substance, so that your baby always remains relaxed.

Still, if you are planning to get pregnant you must not underestimate the danger of maternal stress for the baby. Scientists have discovered that long-term periods of prenatal stress or other chronic strains can negatively influence the development of the baby’s brain. Studies have revealed that in pregnant women the released stress hormones can enter the baby’s blood circulation, thus hindering the development of the brain. If you are carrying a baby and feel stressed, your heart beats faster. Simultaneously, the heart beat of your baby can double, which will put the baby under stress.

Furthermore it seems to be proven that those children who are put under a lot of stress during pregnancy tend to be born prematurely. Astonishingly, experts even report higher rates of diabetes and hypertension in these children. Therefore you should avoid all stressful situations as far as possible.

You should follow these guidelines when planning to have a baby:

  1. 1. Postpone or cancel moving house during or shortly after your pregnancy
  2. 2. Do not flood the unborn child with excessive stimuli (e.g. loud music)
  3. 3. Indulge yourself with sufficient breaks and rest periods
  4. 4.Accept the help of your family and friends

But be assured: it is not only your negative emotions that influence the emotional status and the health of your child. Correspondingly, your positive feelings like joy or love have a positive influence on the child.
