Depressions during your pregnancy- prenatal depressions

Some women are not able to enjoy the whole time of their pregnancy, they suffer from depressions- ca. 10% of all women are affected.

Many women cover up the fact that they suffer from depressions- they feel embarrassed and are afraid not be a good mother. The pregnancy depression then remains undetected by partners, friends and doctors- oftentimes leading to a worsening of the woman’s situation.

The following signs can indicate a pregnancy depression:

  • You suffer from states of anxiety
  • You feel sad and are very easy to aggravate
  • You have serious sleeping problems

Reasons for these depressions are individually different, but the following characteristics are observed frequently:

  • Antecedent depressions (also in your family)
  • Social isolation
  • Problems during your pregnancy
  • Abortive births
  • It took a long time for you to finally get pregnant

The following tips might help to fight depression:

  • Please talk to your gynaecologist
  • If necessary take prescribed medicaments
  • Avoid stressful situations
  • Talk to your partner, family and friends about your feelings

If you feel that you might suffer from (pre-) natal depression you should not hesitate to consult a doctor or therapist. Untreated depression can have a negative impact upon the development of your child and might lead to postnatal depression.
